All you need to know about a Ground Source Heat Pump?

Ground Source Heat Pumps extract natural heat from underground by pumping water through pipes laid under the surface.

The heat pump then increases the temperature of the water from the ground, to provide heating & hot water to your home

Lets get technical, read more on ground source heat pump

A ground source heat pump system harnesses natural heat from underground by pumping water through it in pipes. The water mixture is compressed & goes through a heat exchanger, which extracts the heat & transfers it to the heat pump. The heat is then transferred to your home heating system through underfloor heating &/or radiators.  Although they do need electricity to operate, they produce more energy than they consume, typically at 400% efficiency.

The pump performs the same role as a boiler in a central heating system, but uses ambient heat from the ground, rather than burning fuel, to generate heat & reduce your utility bills. For more information, please read our FAQ’s.

What are the benefits of a Ground Source Heat Pump?

Reduce your bills

Lower utility bills compared to traditional fossil-fuel heating systems.

Eco friendly

Generates significantly less carbon emissions than traditional heating systems.

Minimal maintenance

Long lifespan for over 20 years with proper maintenance.

Efficiency

Properly designed & installed heat pumps regularly achieve more than 400% efficiency.

How much does a Ground Source Heat Pump cost?

A ground source heat pump installation
will cost more than an air source option, due to the groundwork involved. Often it can be 3 times more expensive than an air source heat pump. The great news is that a heat pump could eventually pay for itself through fuel savings, making it a great alternative to traditional heating systems.

Plus there are government grants available. The Boiler Upgrade Scheme offers homeowners up to £6000 to help with installation costs.

FAQs

indicator-arrow-triangle
Do I need planning permission for a ground source heat pump?

Domestic ground source heat pumps are generally allowed under permitted development rules, but this depends on the size & location of your property. We will advise if we feel planning permission is required or you can check with your local authority.

indicator-arrow-triangle
Is my garden suitable for a ground source heat pump?

Your garden doesn't have to be large as a deep vertical system can be used instead of a horizontal system. Nevertheless, your garden must be large enough for digging machinery to create a trench or borehole. And you will need to have suitable access for the machinery to get into your garden.

indicator-arrow-triangle
Should I have a borehole or horizontal trenches?

As part of our full survey & proposal, we will recommend whether a borehole or horizontal trenches will be suitable for your ground source heat pump. It really will depend on theheating & cooling requirements of the property, the geology & local conditions, space available, costing & aesthetic considerations in the garden. Laying trenches is much cheaper than boreholes. Boreholes cost a lot to dig, & reinforcement will be required to prevent the hole from collapsing on itself. However, there are some benefits of having a borehole. Boreholes only take up a fraction of the room that trenches do, so if you only have a small garden, this may be the only option for you. Plus it means you won’t have to dig up half your garden! The area needs to be free from large roots and must be porous.

Does my home need to be well insulated?

Since heat pumps work best when producing heat at a lower temperature than traditional boilers, it’s essential that your home is well insulated & draught-proofed for the heating system to be effective.

Can you install a ground source heat pump in a new build?

Yes & by combining the installation with other building work it can reduce the cost of installing the ground source heating system.

Boiler Upgrade Scheme Government Heat Pump Grant

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme can give you an upfront £5000 or £6000 government grant to help towards the capital costs of installing clean, renewable heat from low carbon technologies such as heat pumps..
